Exclamation Toyota Previa Dies After Driving through Water, Now it won't start.

    Hello All,

I have a 1994 Toyota Previa (not All-Trac, not S/C). It was flooded in the area and I turned around, drove about a mile and then the van died. Pulled over to restart the van, and it would just crank, not start. So I pop the hood, and the AM2 / 20 A Fuse was blown. Did some reading and AM2 Fuse was for Ignition... So I thought that the Distributor / Pickup Coil got wet and created a short.... Replaced the fuse THREE TIMES and as soon as I started it, the fuse blew.... so I went the next morning, and it started then stalled, So I pop the hood again, and this time, the fuse didn't just blow... It was FRIED. So, i'm a little lost here... any suggestions?

It's a bad idea to drive a Previa in a flood, because the air intake is located quite low inside the front bumper/fender. Get water there, and you might be shopping for a replacement engine.

Anyway, the distributor and ignition coil are mounted rather low to the right rear of the engine. You could try unplugging them and see if the fuse still blows, and go from there.

EDIT: And the igniter lives near the ECM, right? Not sure. Sudden death from water usually means one of those high voltage components didn't like the water.

Perhaps use a volt meter for shorts in the ignition coil too.

Has happened in mine, similar to washing car engines off with distributors, you may need to mark your connections/ ignition wires remove as well as pop off distributor cap and check all for moisture, I use dielectric grease on my ignition wires and it seems to help.
