Replacing tie rod ends on 86 2wd
Ive got the tie rod end removed from the steering knuckle but Im making no headway on getting the inner or outer tie rod ends separated from the rest of the vehicle. Everything is rusted together. Anyone do this repair? Im finding no info about it online, in the service manual, etc.
86 2wd cargo van with manual steering.

Re: Replacing tie rod ends on 86 2wd
Have you tried a Tie Rod/Pitman Arm Puller? It's one of those tools that you will rarely use, but it's priceless in situations like this. You can find them for cheap, even Harbor Freight has one (Item #62708), although it is a little on the large size for our application. It can still be used, however it must be twisted and held against the tie rod ends to get enough grip to break it loose. There are smaller ones available that work better for the van's small tie rod ends, but I do not recall where they are available.
If everything is rusted tight, spray with penetrating oil and allow to sit overnight. If needed, spray again and wait another day. Work smarter, not harder. Good luck!!!

The ball joint is free but Im both stuck here, and where the inner connects to the van.

I'm sure you are, but hey man be careful isn't that stuff flammable? You'll be torched and blasted
I'm just saying cause sometimes out of frustration we tend to slip on our safety precautions.

You did loosen the bolt on the collar that holds the tie rod end onto the threaded shaft, right?

yeah the collar is removed, its sitting right beyond it.
Ill just keep working at it but this might be one where I throw in the towel and take it to a shop.

I think there's a lock-nut on there keeping the shaft from turning. Loosen the nut and the shaft should turn. I could be completely wrong though.
