    OEM transmission fluid cooler

does this have a stand alone radiator cooler or does it run through the radiator itself? I cant find any info on it in the 1986 OEM Toyota Van repair book.

Automatic transmissions in vans have fluid coolers in the radiator.

Yes, the ATF cooler is a heat exchanger built right into the DS tank of the radiator. Stand alone coolers can be added (I've done this), but the factory relies on the radiator coolers only. Tim

can you add a transmission cooler to a manual? i might be towing a uhaul here in a couple days and thought it might help keep the heat down.

Automatics need pressure to operate, and there's a pump inside that provides it. When there's positive pressure, you can use that to move the fluid in and out of external coolers. Manual transmissions use "splash type" lubrication. The gears spin/mesh inside a box with gear oil. Their movement and the splashing of the oil is what lubricates (no pumps or positive pressure). For this reason, unless you were to rig up an external pump, there's really no way to move the gear oil through a cooler. Typically overheating isn't an issue on manual transmissions, so it's not really anything you need to worry about. A much more real worry would be engine cooling. Keep a close eye on your temperature gauge while towing. Make sure your thermostat, fan clutch, radiator, and fan shroud are in good shape. Tim
