    JDM Engine Replacement Question

I have a question for you experienced experts. How tough is it to replace the engine? Having replaced engines before, including an older Honda CVCC vacuum line/sensor beast in a '78 Accord, I am not afraid of work; I am worried about needing a workshop of special tools, or tricks/procedures that make it impossible to execute correctly the first time. Pilots have a saying: "Experience is what you get right after you need it." I have a '94 LE/SC/AWD with 289K miles that is diagnosed with a blown head gasket, and I can't find any other vehicle new or old that has the same utility as this van, especially in the wintertime or in the Rocky Mountain region.

    Re: JDM Engine Replacement Question

As long as there are reasonably priced low mile JDM engines available I tend to agree with your decision to replace the entire engine rather than mess around with repair. As I'm sure you're aware, the engine needs to come out from the bottom. I can't think of any special tools required, but you will need to get the Previa up high enough to drop it out. Here's a link to a good thread that shows a couple ways to get it done:

Here's a thread I made while replacing my head gasket (if there's a next time, I'll be replacing the entire engine)

One thing worth mentioning is the SADS. Whatever you do DON'T let it hang there. Once it's disconnected from the crankshaft pulley, wire it up or support it somehow. Failure to do so will likely result in a damaged flex coupler. Tim

    Re: JDM Engine Replacement Question

Excellent information! That gives me a great idea of the total scope of a project like this. Now all I have to do is decide if I can create the time and space for it. Thank you very much!
