I live on the coast and rust issues are really bad out here. I've noticed that little rock paint chips will start to rust out fast.

What is the best process for treating these chips to prevent further rust, as far as specific paint products to use?

For a pencil eraser sized chip, I was thinking about hand sanding it until I no longer saw rust to the size of a quarter and then putting masking tape around it and spray painting it
