3CT Townace REAR DIFF RATIO question ...4.55 vs 4.11

    Hi All,
My 3CT automatic 4WD 1993 Townace has a 4.55 rear end. Has anyone put a 4.11 rear end unit into the diff? if so , what did it accomplish?
It strikes me that if one is mainly driving highways and byways that a little taller rear end might put you closer to peak torque for the diesel...
    Thank you,
    Kara

Gear ratios are a delicate balance particularly for a relatively underpowered vehicle. Too high a ratio and it struggles to get going and can decrease your overall fuel mileage , too low and it's screaming on the highway and can decreae your fuel mileage unless you slow down. The bigger issue though is going to be parts availabilty and cost. Since it is s 4WD, in order to re-gear you will have to do both front and rear differentials(cost). The front ring gear in these seems to not be very common(availability). There are some online gear calculators that you can play with or call a gear supply house(I have used Randys Ring and Pinion in the past) and pick their brain but you need to be very specific that this is a small low power diesel in a not very aerodynamic brick. I believe the USDM 4WD 5 spds came with a 4.30 ratio and the 4WD autos with a 4.78.

Hi , I just did all the shocks on my 1993 3C-T 4WD . I went into the KYB master spec list and came up with 344044 for the rears and 344098 on the fronts , both Excel-G model shocks. Neither shock was listed for Townace , however the mechanical travel specs and the type and weight of the vehicles that were recommended seemed close enough and they are working fine . Got them from NAPA Auto.
Hope this helps. They are very simple to replace. Kinderspiel .
    Cheers,
    Kara

    Hi All,
Having driven to California, down the US-101 coastal freeway from Washington State--and back again . I doubt I would be making to rear differential any taller. Going over hills is slow enough as it is and I would not want to exacerbate this delightful characteristic of the 3C-T . It really makes me wonder about the 2CT Townace camper vans. Like 10mph over a hill?
    Cheers,
    Kara
