If it is the thermostat any good OEM reccomnedations on where to buy? I have the failsafe one in from auto zone right now.
Re: 4x4 over heating at idle only
I have read here that these vans should only run the Toyota thermo. I picked one up at Hooman Toyota in LB for around 20 bucks on special order. If fact, I get a lot of miscellaneous items there. Pretty helpful staff.

Here's an excellent thread with part numbers and illustrations, just incase you haven't already read this one-

Re: 4x4 over heating at idle only
I would think that if the thermostat were not opening, the engine would overheat all the time, not just at idle. When it gets hot, can you hear the fan clutch engage? I would say, based on my own experience, that your radiator is partially plugged, and would need to be removed and flushed, if so.
