Re ‘85 VanWagon Rear wheel drive…
Can the stock 3Y be replaced with a 4Y engine? Would it be plug and play
with engine mounts and transmission?

Yes, 3y and 4y engines are interchangeable. The things you mention will not be a problem. The bigger displacement of the 4y will give a noticeable power increase. Even though the intake manifolds are different, as long as you don't mix tops/bottoms you can use either. If you keep the 3y intake, just make sure to use 3Y intake manifold gaskets (round ports). If you use a 4y intake, use 4y intake manifold gaskets (square ports). To keep things simple, you should also use the 3y distributor with the vacuum advance. It would be possible to upgrade to the 4y electronic advance distributor, but that would also require a 4y ECU and probably be more work than it's worth. Tim
