View Full Version : Intermittent starting issue

I've read many threads on here about starting issues and have gone through all of the suggestions (besides the nuetral starter switch and ignition switch) and figured I'd ask here for any suggestions.

Van has intermittent starting. No click. Verified that the Circuit Opening Relay is working properly. Battery is new. New starter. The battery will get drained occasionally and has to be jumped (which may or may not be part of the starting issues). If I tap on the starter I can usually always get the van to start. The connections are all tight on the starter and both bolts are tight securing the starter.

I've gone through, replaced and/or inspected all fuses and fusible links.

Previous owner said there was an ignition switch bypass in the van (which was removed when I bought it) I suspect was installed due to this exact intermittent starting issue. Could that be a solution?

Could this be a grounding issue? Why would I have to "bump" the starter all the time to get it started?

Anybody got any clues or advice for me?

Use a jumper wire and bypass the control wire on the starter
If it starts no problem with a bypass wire, then the electrical problem is somewhere between the control wire, the ignition switch (ie in the dash) and the battery
Any rusty grounds in the dash should be cleaned up

Some vans end up with a bypass wire permanently.....

Thanks for the response. By control wire I'm assuming you mean the wire with the little harness connecting to the starter? How should I jump it? Just 12v to the terminal?
Would having a permanent bypass wire be alright? As far as not causing more issues down the road?

I'll have to do some tests soon.

Thanks for sharing that thread too!
