Hey gang, I wanted to see if maybe anyone has any ideas as to what I might be hearing coming from what sounds like under the alternator/drivers side of the engine. This is a 89 2WD TV. It sounds like it could be an air leak.. or something else making a sshhh sound. I can hear it pretty good from under the van too, on the drivers side. Nothing seems to be running any different though. It also doesn't really ramp up or change that much when I rev the engine.

Meanwhile, a few weeks ago I had a friend (who's a mechanic/very familiar with older Toyotas) redo my Transmission Filter. When I got it back, I noticed a very faint high pitch tone coming from under the sliding door/from around the transmission. (I usually start it up and then load some stuff in the side door while it warms up a sec). For any of you audio buffs out there, it's around 10kHz or so. Up there. It would go away after driving it a few miles.

NOW.. with this new sound, the air/sshhh thing that's happening, the 10kHz tone has become less apparent and fluttering a little. Almost like maybe the two noises are connected..?? Maybe not at all?

:?:

*fingers crossed it's nothing too bad*

Thanks!

Well, with some further inspection I think it might be the exhaust manifold. I'm definitely noticing a strong exhaust smell, and I know I said it wasn't running any different, but I have noticed a little puttering and lagging when I hit the throttle. I'm going to dig through the forums here and see what I come up with. If anyone knows a specific thread covering anything manifold related, do you mind throwing down a link?

Thanks!
