1989 van wagon wiper linkage

Has anyone replaced the wiper linkage on a van wagon?
my driver side wiper is completely out of sink if it works at all . I removed the dash but I can barely see the thing let alone think of how to get to it without removing the clutch.

Your gonna have to go deep into the dash and move a lot of things out of the way, I've don't it once and took a few pictures but I'm not bale to find them, that day I had time and the van in the wrecking yard wasn't going anywhere any time soon so I did it just to get the experience. I didn't actually pull the wiper linkage I was just trying to get to it. I think I stopped cause I didn't have all the proper tools to make it easier- long extensions and wobble connector will help.

Its been my experience that when wipers go "out of sync" the linkages are usually still okay, the fact that it works sometimes would indicate the linkage is moving, even if the sockets are sloppy, the arms should stay relatively in sync.

9x out of 10, the fault will be at the wiper arm mount, they are just aluminum and if allowed to get loose, can strip the knurling.
If you can move the arms independently when the wipers are shut off, that would be your big indicator that arms are loose at the tower connection.
Its a simple matter of tightening the jam nut (under the plastic cover, at the base of the arm)

Its worth taking a look, because even if it isnt part of the problem it will take less than 10min to verify
and might suck to spend 10 hours under the dash only to find the linkage is intact.

I opened the dash enough to be able to see the linkage moving and you’re right it’s still intact. And it’s just like you said the jam not under the cover was rusty and loose cleaned it off and tightened it up and now both wipers are moving together again. Thanks a lot you saved me a lot of time and headache. There’s really no info on the wiper system for these vans online And even talking to some mechanic friends they had no idea really. One things for sure after all this I’ll be babying the hell out of my wipers.
