Friends,
I was replacing the starter motor from below and noticed this hose disconnected. Not sure where this goes to and I'm not sure if it's related to emissions or what. The photos are from the bottom and top. The hose is currently just hanging on a bracket near the P/S reservoir.
Any help or idea where this may go? I am up for smog and I'm afraid this might affect it. Thanks so much.

Friends, as an update, and maybe this can help- I see this hose as part of transmission dip stick, but still not sure where the other end goes to.
Thanks for the help

I haven't had a chance to look at either of mine but if one end of the hose is attached to the dipstick tube then it's probably a just a vent.

Thanks. It has a clamp on the end that's hanging loose. If it is a vent hose for the tranny dipstick, would that connect to the engine somewhere?

If it is a vent, it would not connect to the engine. It's purpose would be to allow the transmission to breath. When the fluid heats up it expands and if the transmission were totally sealed it would likely release the pressure from that expansion through gaskets and seals creating seepage and leaks. Also, when you add fluid the air in the transmission needs someway to escape as it's being displaced by the fluid. This would be a painfully slow and messy process without some type of vent.
There may have been a valve of some sort in the end to keep dust out which would explain the clamp. I'll take a look at mine later today and let you know what I find.

The hose on mine went from the dipstick tube to a vent port on the top of the transmission case. The picture is taken from just behind the battery box looking across the top of the transmission towards the passenger side front tire.

Perfect, and thank you! I think I see it on my 87, it seems like the hose connects to a plastic piece on the tranny housing, driver side, near the battery box? Interestingly, on mine, there was a cap that I removed. I wonder after 34 years if it was ever connected!
