About a month ago a bunch of marmots chewed through a bunch of the wiring in my van and I ended up losing power on the drive home from work. I spliced what I could back together to get it running again and back home with wiring sleeves hoping to solder everything later. After all the wires were reconnected to the best of my ability and the battery was recharge the van drove fine but the battery was draining super fast and not getting recharged by the alternator. I ran a quick test removing a shoe from the battery with the van running and the van turned off so my assumption is the wiring was not put back together properly for the charging system. I do have the maintenance book but the previous owner made alot of janky changes to the wiring so it's not the same. I have two white cables coming up from my alternator that are connected to a nut which is attached to a 2 cords, one is a speaker cable with just one side connected to the nut and the other side not connected to anything, the other side of this cord is attached to the positive terminal of the battery. The other cord attached to this nut goes into a sleeve and from there it sorta looks like it makes a loop in the battery compartment. Almost like it's an attempt to bypass the fusible link. I'll attach pictures for a better explanation. Thank you.

The alternator wiring is supposed to go to the Positive terminal block under the drivers seat, the wiring from the battery/fusible link marries up to the same post.
Wiring diagram will be your friend here.
Also take a look at Tim's write-up on Fusible links, that should answer most of your questions.
