Hello! My van, which I'm in love with, started making a noise about a month ago that was very unsettling. After 2 hours of driving, or ~105 miles driving, whichever comes first from starting the van from cold, my van seems to have a knock that starts as mild and becomes increasingly worse as I continue to drive it to the point after about another hour or two I need to stop and let it cool down to run properly again. After waiting until the engine cools down completely, I can start it again and the noise won't happen again for another 2 hours of driving or about ~105 miles, pretty much on the dot. So the problem resets every time the engine starts from cold.
I've had the spark plugs replaced because of the noise, the mechanic I took it to assured me it was just that. It helped alleviate some issues with misfiring, but this knock persists as it occurs as stated above. I've taken it to another mechanic after this talking about the problem and they basically said the engine runs okay but eventually the engine will need to be replaced. The problem is they couldn't find a a replacement engine because of the age of the vehicle.
My question to you fine folks is do you have any suggestions on where to find a replacement engine? Or if this noise is as serious as the mechanic states? I get it's hard to tell what the noise is without hearing it. I've had many mechanics try to sell things onto me that didn't need to be done, and if this isn't an engine issue, what it might be. I'm pretty positive it is, just not sure how long the life of the engine is that is there will last.
Of course this happened right as I started my road trip across the U.S. so I'm staying at a buddy's house in Colorado Springs trying to think of a potential solution to my problem. I'm seriously wondering on if I should sell the vehicle or try and fix it, as it's been my motto since I've gotten the van to "run it until it dies completely." I've put a lot of work into making this van my own and I would really like to keep using it if it's not just going to be a headache to keep maintain the upkeep on this van. There's a lot of quirks to this van, just like anything this old, but none of it is major besides this issue, so if it can be fixed I'd love to make it happen, as long as it's not too expensive.

Technical Specifications on the van: It's a 1987 2wd Vanwagon 5 speed manual with ~267,000 miles on it. The motor is a 22RE (I'm sure you guys have gathered such, being ToyotaVanTech and all). Burns small amounts of oil that is topped off regularly. Coolant is topped off regularly as small amounts are lost over time. Tune up was done by a friend two years ago, obviously he didn't do the spark plugs right if they needed to be replaced aha.
