View Full Version : Does this fuel pump sound sick?

I am sharing a video of the noise my fuel pump makes. I am having hard warm starts and I wonder if this noise is normal ? For comparison, on my other van the fuel pump is barely audible
I have the fuel pump check connector shorted. Engine is not running of course. I wonder if the pump is on its way out. Would a clogged fuel filter cause the pump to make noise?

I took a listen but didn't hear anything unusual. This is one of those things that a recording wouldn't be as good as being there in person. Wish I could offer more.

Hear is a better video can anyone please put in their thoughts. This pump sounds very noisy. Compared to my other van I cannot hear it or just barely

Hard to hear in the vid still, but I know this... mine just purrs along without any hiccups to it. From the sound of yours (best I could tell anyways) it seems to be a bit hesitant and more noisy than mine. Might be time for a new denso fuel pump.

Does denso still make fuel pump for our vans? Does anyone have the part number? I cannot find in on the denso site, or rockauto

Denso part numbers are, 951-0012 pump by itself, and 950-0147 pump with strainer. Don't know if they still make them. A few months ago when I was searching for one for my mr2 which uses the same pump, I couldn't find a denso anywhere in stock. I backordered one on summit after calling them and they said they didn't have any notes from denso saying thay it was discontinued. I canceled my order after a few months of the expected ship date just pushed back farther. Your local toyota dealership will probably be able to get one as long you are willing to pay the extra 300 or dollars. Mine said they could order one but I didn't want to pay that much so I went with a Delphi pump, CFE0486. Delphi is an oem fuel pump manufacturer so I feel confident it will last for a while.

Thanks!
my fuel pump does still work, but I have my fuel tank out, to fix the fuel level sender, and have the tank de-rusted.
so now i am facing the choice to replace my fuel pump as well, or leave it as it is. I think it might be the original pump, the number looks toyota/denso. But someone has been here before, as one of the hose clamps is replaced with a crappy one, and the strainer and the rubber thingie are missing. Which kinda tells me that it wasn’t a toyota dealer replacing it for a new toyota pump. So i assume it has done 180.000 miles
so now I have to decide to either replace it with a delphi, sidat or hitachi, or leave the working original one…
over here a toyota one is nearly $500

If you continue using the working one at least put on a new strainer. Autozone has Delphi ones for 20-30 dollars.

The Denso Fuel Pump part number for the van Is discontinued, however this Denso Pump that says its not compatible with the van works just fine
Denso 950-0152 (https://www.ebay.com/vod/FetchOrderDetails?itemId=295048966299&transactionId=2038611641019&mkevt=1&mkpid=0&emsid=e11401.m1842.l5919&mkcid=7&ch=osgood&euid=7454fd5b3bcf49d98151cb7c344d55b2&bu=43208173922&osub=-1%7E1&crd=20220831182752&segname=11401)

If you really want denso you can try these pumps,
Part Number: 2322016190
Supersession(s): 23220-16190; 2322002020; 2322019015
These numbers are from https://parts.toyota.com/p/Toyota_1987_Van-LE-MT/Electric-Fuel-Pump/63036812/2322016190.html
This website is really useful for looking up oem part numbers and the Supersession part numbers too.

Thanks, sorry for the late reply, somehow, I could not open this site for a couple of days.
I looked into that denso one, but it also seems to be unavailable at all the places I looked, except for that ebay user, with lots of reviews, that their order got cancelled, because he doesn't have it either.
No matter, I just ordered the Delphi one and a strainer from rockauto. If those are good quality as well i gladly replace it just for the piece of mind.
The roadside rescue people are generally nice guys, but I rather like to see them as few times as possible :wnk:
On the outside the pump looked fine, it also worked fine I think, but looking at the crud that came from the pipes and fuel filter, it has had a long and hard life.

The delphi is fine. I have used other delphi parts and they have been fine. for example Hyundai has a known issue with their ignition coils and so rather than replace under warranty to get the same coil that will fail ultimately, I purchased Delphi coils and for 30000 miles so far outperform OEM
