View Full Version : Cylinder Head Rebuild - What are my options? 2C engine

My Townace was getting work done over the winter- needed to have the fuel injection pump rebuilt (learned that a tooth sheared on a gear within the governor) and also decided to replace the timing belt... So the van sat for a few months at the mechanics during the whole ordeal. Earlier this week, everything was looking good for the Townie to hit the road again, when the mechanic called and informed me that it had gotten worse...

Apparently while the engine sat, partly dissembled, moisture caused a valve to stick and when they cranked the engine, the stuck valve jammed the camshaft, caused it to shear, and also bent the valve or valves and possibly damaging the head.

They consulted local engine specialist and it was recommend that I replace the entire head cylinder assembly due to how they manufacture these components. I guess everything is ceramic-casted together, then machined to the proper tolerances, so these components (head, valves, and camshaft) are created as a machined set and thus each component cannot be individually sourced and replaced? Is this true?

Did my mechanic accidentally screw me? I was told by someone else, he should have manually cranked the engine first before cold starting it... :wall:

What are my options here? Has anyone else survived a similar catastrophe? I'm guessing this is a similar issue if a timing belt failed...

I do have access to a parts van, but the engine is a 2CT.

I know the part numbers are different in the diagram, but does anyone know if this would bolt on to my 2C? Does the turbo actually interface with this area of the engine?

Was able to source parts through - http://www.rockymountainimports.net (http://www.rockymountainimports.net) Give them a call and ask for John, he was great to deal with and was super knowledgable.

Was he able to source a new or rebuilt C/H for the 2C motor or is the 2CT interchangeable?

Thank you:thmbup:

He sourced a new one and said the 2C and 2C-T use the same cylinder head. Though the pistons are different between the 2 engines.

Originally when I saw the invoice I had concerns because it stated 2CT, but after calling John, he guaranteed parts he supplies will be 100% correct for the repair. Such a relief to have a person to talk this through, rather than usual deep drive into part numbers, compatibility, and foreign e-commerce sites. The prices were fair too.

Nice thanks for the follow up:thmbup: I've used them before as well for the rear brake shoes and brake cylinders, it was pricey but I didn't know which vehicle they would interchange with according to the part number I had.

Thank you

I feel your mechanic has stiffed you. the valve train is soaked in oil and regardless of It being sat for a few months I fail to see how a valve has corroded and got stuck in your head. a chrome nickel hardened steel valve in an alloy head??? which was also running prior to strip down? I think they have made a mistake and blamed it on this. its seems almost impossible. this is the sort of thing that happens in old industrial engines with cheap valves and stone age heads.
sorry I just got annoyed by mechanics.
