Hi,
I have a 88 Van Wagon. Recently it has started making a whistling sound when idling. Once I step on the gas it goes away. I've not taken it to a mechanic yet. I wanted to see if anyone may have a suggestion before I do. I've searched the forum but didn't see anything that seemed to be the same problem.
If this is an easy fix then I would like to do it myself if I can. On the other hand I would like to know what could be wrong before I go to a shop. Any thoughts . . . .:cnfsd:

Fan belt..? Idler pulley bearing..?

You could try using a piece of heater or even garden hose as a stethoscope/direction finder. Works with or without a funnel in the end.

Of course a stethoscope will work as well. Just mind the fan and other moving parts, as always.

I once had a whistle like a tea kettle and it turned out to be a faulty check valve in the fuel pump. to isolate if its a pulley just remove each belt one at a time to see if the noise goes away
