So I have decided to go the oversized oil filter route because I want to implement 10000km oil change intervals paired with a good quality synthetic oil. A larger filter would be perfect for longer oil change duration; potential to trap more particulates with less drop off in flow rate. I personally like the Bosch filters as they are easier to find, have a high amount of actual filter media per oil filter, are all metal, and generally high quality while affordable. I also prefer their WS "workshop" line (this is what repair shops buy) as they appear to be the same as the retail without the fancy packaging, and very cheap, much less than retail FRAM cardboard orange cans.

Direct fit options
The direct fit retail BOSCH filter is the 3330
The direct fit workshop BOSCH filter is the 72161WS, an friendly acquaintance at NAPA parts shop will sell these to me for < $4 CAD; pretty dam good considering that Canadian tire and Walmart want 2x the price for a FRAM orange can cardboard special.

Oversize options
http://zenseeker.net, a great read and aggregate of knowledge introduced the idea in my head, with the Toyota 90915-YZZD3 filter as a workable oversize filter; used on Tundras, Landcruisers, machines with much larger engines and oil capacities.

My research indicates that the BOSCH 72143WS is the oversize filter that will work on the Previa:
-Bosch 3422 is the oversized version of 3330 (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/152873-5vzfe-bosch-premium-oil-filter-parts-compatibility-using-oversized-filter.html)
-Bosch 72143WS workshop version of 3422 (http://www.oilfilter-crossreference.com/)

I estimate it has nearly double the filter medium (area) if construction techniques are equal. NAPA guy will sell these to me for < $4.5 CAD, the retail 3422 runs for $6.5 USD on Amazon. I love a good deal. Here are the comparison pics, note oil inflow holes are the same size:

Nice research and documentation:thmbup:

Not to discredit TheMan's option cause he is DA MAN when it comes to Previas'

Maybe when someone gets a chance to slice open a Denso and a Bosch and compare them side by side we can get get a good comparison of the inner workings.

Kinda like do we use Duracell... Energizer... Rayovac... Which one stands to be the best!!!

For the record... I'm a OEM user myself but finding a good alternative is nice to know.

A dozen oil filters on hand--impressive.

Absolutely. I am sure the OEMs are great; just harder to come by at a reasonable price here, so I though I would share my find with the more obscure workshop line of bosch filters.

Maybe there's a correlation between toyota van ownership and hording... I'll check myself in when I get more Vans than Tim, im ok with hording oil filters for now.
