I am fixing up my 4x4 I have replaced Thermostat, fan clutch, water pump and radiator seems to be ok. The van drives at a normal temperature on the highway but on idle it over heats. I am thinking I might need a better thermostat I just put a cheap one in. Anyone else had this problem?

I have read here that these vans should only run the Toyota thermo. I picked one up at Hooman Toyota in LB for around 20 bucks on special order. If fact, I get a lot of miscellaneous items there. Pretty helpful staff.

I would think that if the thermostat were not opening, the engine would overheat all the time, not just at idle. When it gets hot, can you hear the fan clutch engage? I would say, based on my own experience, that your radiator is partially plugged, and would need to be removed and flushed, if so.
