View Full Version : Red Oil Light?

Hey guys, happy New Year! Been chasing the cause of the red oil light on my dash. Replaced the pressure sender above the oil filter, still comes on. I changed the oil pan gasket yesterday and I noticed that even though I only have the red light, I have the level sensor AND wiring on the driver's side of my oil pan. When I took the pan off, it was SHATTERED. I wish I got some pictures, but the entire bottom half of that sensor was all over my engine bay. I'm not *too* worried about it, I cleaned the screen on the oil pump and I haven't had any weird rotating assembly noise at all...including lifters, they're quiet.

Is there any way the other sensor would affect the red oil light? I was under the impression my van was a DX, but the wiring diagrams for the 87 van (mine is an 86) show this splice for an LX (I thought there was only LE, DX, and DLX. Is "LX" also "DLX"?)

Hopefully my light is being caused by the oil LEVEL circuit, and isn't an actual oil pressure problem. :silvervan:

IIRC - The LE version has a low level indicator (idiot light) as well as a gauge for pressure.
The DX model uses the light for BOTH functions, in other words, the light will come on for EITHER low pressure or low level.
(The DX pressure sender is an on/off switch only, the LE pressure switch is a variable unit, they are not interchangeable)

The shattered sensor will definitely cause the light to come on.

By the way, the sensor needs to be extracted BEFORE the pan is removed or it will get destroyed.

Hey Burntboot!
I'm gonna unplug the level sensor since it was destroyed when I took it out. I extracted it from the pan before I took the pan off, but I wasn't careful enough and it shattered. Thanks for the response!
