F282 rear differential

My diff is loud on my 4wd, and it's code # F282 (7.5" and 4.3 ratio) - does anyone know if there is a source other than the dealer for the parts in there? Anyone rebuilt one? Just investigating my options. Mechanic says that Toyota has the parts but it's like over $1000 parts alone.

I actually have a 2wd cargo model which happens to have the same F282 differential. I guess I could swap them, but that gets into a slippery slope....

I would be tempted to call the dealer for a price quote directly.

I replaced my rear diff a couple of years ago and it was $1200 CDN, US prices are generally about half of what we pay, so I can't see it being $1G down there.
Look around and you may be surprised.

While things may be different where you live, up here, profit margins on dealer parts are very skinny, some shops will often mark-up the part (sometimes heavily) to compensate for the lost margin or to encourage a different part source that generates a better profit.
It doesn't cost you anything to look around a bit.

If he isn't interested in installing supplied parts, it isn't a hard job to do yourself, mostly just PITA grunt work.
Having a lift makes it easier but I did mine in the driveway without issue.

That's good advice, thanks! Having not ever worked with a differential I don't know what parts you typically replace when you rebuild them. I assume that's drive pinion and ring gear, primarily? Then do you have to do the side gears and pinions? Maybe some bearings/seals?

If I collected the proper parts, I'm sure he'd install them for me.

Final Gear Kit 41201-80004 (that's the 4.3 ratio ring gear and drive pinion) looks to be about $650. But the other stuff I'm not completely sure which part number I'd need. Do you remember what parts you ended up using to rebuild yours?

I didn't realize your guy was pricing out the parts to rebuild your old one, but that would explain the high price.

Diff's can be a funny thing and it is super important that your guy is proficient at rebuilding them.
Pinion preload, gear backlash and gear mesh all have to be perfect or all those new parts will be garbage in short order.
Getting it right can be fiddly, time consuming (read expensive) labour, not too mention all the special tools involved.
Not saying it can't be done, its just a lot of work and a bit of a gamble.
Aside from all the hard parts you outlined, you should also replace all the bearings, sleeves, retainers.... thats why it gets so expensive.

The better option is to replace it as an entire unit.
Toyota does NOT rebuild them, they only sell brand new units, hard to go wrong.
Aside from the assembly being cheaper than the individual parts, swapping out diff's is easy peasy work and WAY less labour.
The only extra parts you'll need is the gasket (diff assembly to axle housing) a couple of axle seals and some gear oil.

I rate it as a 4 beer project (about 3 hours if you take your time and nothing is seized) the hardest part is pulling the axles.
Shop time should be significantly less, maybe on the order of 1-2 hrs.
Certainly worth looking into.

Wow, thanks! I guess rebuilding the differential is no joke.

This is primarily a transmission shop and they did new bearings and seals in my manual transmission. Good work. I'm pretty sure they are capable of the work, though it sounds like it's a lot of labor. I didn't realize you were talking about having bought a whole new rear differential assembly and putting it in as a unit.

This is what I'm seeing for parts for the 4.3 gear ratio. Looks like Toyota calls it the "carrier assembly." Wonder why the three different parts - as in what's exactly different in them anyway? And the price difference... yikes!

YR3# refers to 4WD, 5F is std trans.
I don't know why they list auto's and std's as having the same gear ratio as I am pretty sure that is not the case.

Either way, I just dug through my paperwork and found that my 88 (std, 4WD) took the 2nd option Pt#41110-28070.
Am surprised at the price quoted, back in 2011 when I did mine, CDN list was $1455 and my special price was $1200.
If you have a relationship with your local dealer I would go and talk to them and see what they can do for you.
Never know it may be worth a shot.

Did your guy quote you an all-in price for the complete over-haul?
It still may be worthwhile going new, just depends on how much labour is involved.

Have they pulled the diff yet to inspect it?
Just wondering why they would want to replace the gear set during a rebuild.
Been my experience that bearings are usually the cause of noises and unless you've been driving it that way (noisy) for a long time, or there's a problem with the pinion shaft showing damage at the seal area, the ring and pinion can usually be reused.
Maybe it is worth asking him a few more questions??

Out of curiosity, have you tried replacing the gear oil and using a diff additive to see if it makes a difference?
You may be able to buy some time if things aren't totally screwed

That's extremely helpful info - I appreciate it.

It kinda went like this: "Now that the gearbox is so quiet, that noise from the rear diff we talked about is kinda driving me nuts. Can you fix that? Do you wanna see if any parts are available before I bring it in?"

I talked to him today, when he mentioned the dealer definitely has whatever might be needed. But that it could be as much as like $1,500 for the parts alone. He was checking some other sources but said that he didn't think anyone would have parts. Possibly he was referring to the price for the entire assembly, but I'll have to check with him tomorrow. Thought I'd check here.

What's funny is that my 2wd has he same F282 code on the badge but it must have different parts in it. I think only the cargo 2wd automatic with leaf springs has the 4.3 ratio like the 4wd. But why would there be three different options with the same gear ratio through Toyota right?

Right now I've got Royal Purple in it (an attempt to quiet it), and before that I had regular ol' gear oil to which I added Power Punch. It's got a whirring/winding noise under load mostly at speeds around 2nd/3rd gear. Could probably drive it forever like it is, but it bugs me is all. Does it $1,500 bug me? Hmmmm....

after reading this I too was wondering why the ratios we're the same for the different types of running gear, auto, manual, 2WD, 4WD, ect and this this what I was able to look up. It looks like it'll work with many different vehicles from 84-97???

i replaced the differential in my van (F292) with a 3.70 F differential from an 86 2wd pickup truck and it compltely bolted up, nothing had to be changed. should be the same for a cressida, previa, and maybe a few other vehicles

When I was in Richmond, BC awhile back to look at pulling parts from a cargo van, the guy was reluctant to let me pull and wanted everyone who contacted him to show up at once and take everything they wanted that way he could scrap the leftover or he just wanted to sell the van as a whole. But he was telling me that there was a guy looking to use the rear diff out of the van for a AE86 swap cause it was beefier and would fit directly. Not sure how reliable that statement is but I found it to be very interesting and worth mentioning.

i read that somewhere too, i believe (but could be completely wrong) that i read it had to do with our diffs having oil baffles which oiled the gears and bearings more reliably than the oil just splashing around the bottom of the case....i could be very wrong with this but the van diff i took out and replaced with the truck diff had some little things on each side of the bearings where the axles went in that the pickup diff didnt have

What I had been hoping would be what Burntboot described as a 4-beer job has turned epic. Using the info from this thread and checking out the applications on Toyota's website, I pulled the rear carrier assembly from a 1994 Previa Alltrack AT, assuming it was part # 4111028070 and would fit my 1988 Std 4WD van. One of my axles was hopelessly stuck, and after wailing on it with a sledgehammer attached to a chain, applying heat and various penetrating oils and breaking several carabiners in the process, I gave up and took it to a transmission shop. They luckily got the axle out but now they are telling me my axle splines are different than the spiders in the differential that I brought them. Is the Toyota database confused, or is it me? I guess I'll just ask the shop to rebuild my diff, assuming they can find parts... which I'm guessing will be a lot more expensive than the useless one I bought from the Pick n' Pull for $90. Toyota wants $2767 for a new one these days.

They sell gear sets and install kits for our rear diffs... alternatively you can pull one from a 2wd toyota pickup 79-95. It's a 7.5" differential and bolts right in (27 spline). I have personally regeared and worked with these differentials. If you haven't ever done gears, it's unlikely that you will own the tools to do this job (dial gauge, press and etc...). A regear job at any reputable shop including parts should run between 6-700 bucks. Bare in mind that's you taking just the diff to get regeared, not driving the van in with all the included labor that goes along with removing it/ installing it. My money would be sourcing a good used one out of a toy pickup... problem is finding one with 4.30's. They are out there, but not as common.

I'm just wondering why the Previa diff didn't work when the Toyota database shows the carrier/gear ratio being the same between AT Previa and Std 4WD Van. Seems like it would be hard to find a junkyard Pickup with the correct gear ratio?

I really don't have any experience with the Previa rear diff. When you say it didn't fit, how did it not fit? To long in the housing? To wide/ tall to fit in the housing?

I know that the mini trucks did have 4.30's in some variety, they just aren't nearly as common.

From looking at the Previa rear it's almost identical to the van... I have no idea what the spline count on the rear shafts are though. Not sure if they are different... if they are 27 spline though, they should fit. You said you had a tough time getting your shaft out no? May be related... my splines slid right in and out. I am thinking you have some mashed splines not letting them go in easy. Nothing a file couldn't fix. Drop by the shop and have a look.

My diff is loud on my 4wd, and it's code # F282 (7.5" and 4.3 ratio) - does anyone know if there is a source other than the dealer for the parts in there? Anyone rebuilt one? Just investigating my options. Mechanic says that Toyota has the parts but it's like over $1000 parts alone.

I actually have a 2wd cargo model which happens to have the same F282 differential. I guess I could swap them, but that gets into a slippery slope....

My 88 4x4 Van Wagon has a Previa rear (part# 440-58033G / 1991-93, 4.3 ratio). I ordered it through 410 Auto Wrecking in Buckley, WA cost was $375.... A memeber (not sure if he is still on here, krabkrust?) put it in and I don't think he had to make any mods. It sounds much better back there! Except for the lake of rear diff fluid on my driveway but that's the pinion seal lol.

Looks like 440-58033G is JustParts.com's internal number for the Toyota 41110-28070 and they list all the same Previas and Vans as compatible. I just entered my VIN and the VIN of the Pick n' Pull donor van into Toyota's parts website and both pull up 41110-28070 for the rear carrier. I called the shop to confirm that the part SHOULD fit but they said the axles on the Van are definitely larger than the holes on the Previa diff. The splines are fine and slide in and out of my carrier, but won't go into the Previa one. Weird. Maybe someone swapped rear ends on the donor van with some other part?

i think there were some changes in 94/95 with the previas regarding supercharged and all trac...i know a drivehaft from an earlier non s/c would not fit a 95 s/c i owned...
