I just bought a right hand drive (imported) 4wd diesel 89 surf ace. In pretty good shape but needs for sure, some rear break parts and a thermostat
I usually use sites like rockauto.com, but being an import, I don't know that the parts will fit. For example, when I look for a thermostat, I don't find a diesel option... Any tips?

Is that the one that was for sale in Victoria? You bought a one of a kind for the U.S., you need to use your chassis code to insure you get the correct parts for the diesel motor and chassis. There's no part numbers listed on the van so the chassis code will be your best friend and I'm not sure which parts would be interchangeable with the U.S. vans either?

But a lot of parts may have to be ordered from out of the country-

1) Ebay Japan
2) RockyMountainImporters
3) Ebay UK

Check them out and you'll need to cross reference the international part numbers with the U.S. ones and keep a folder with all your notes so you don't have to look them up all the time.

Good luck!!!

Yes it sure is the one from Victoria.

The guy who sold it to me knew a lot about these vans, in general, this was his 11th one.

He told me that the vast majority of parts for this were interchangeable with parts for the domestic van's. I think I'll be able to source most of what I need through the normal domestic sources. I'm just going to have to figure out how to get those part numbers.

Once I find that chassis code that you speak of, how do I use it to find the part numbers?

thank you for the advice… Troy

What a small world, I emailed him when he was selling his 85' van and asked about the 89' and he give a list of things that he had done, but when he said diesel I lost interest cause the parts are harder to find here, at least that's what I've been assuming:?:. But anyways I wasn't interested in finding out either since there's no diesel toyotas that I know of here in the U.S.

Did the seller give you a walk thru about the Van and tell you where he gets his parts from? I know the parts are readily available in Canada because they have access to parts importers. But yes your right some parts are interchangeable with the U.S. vans and some aren't.

For or a fact I know the rear drums, shoes and wheel cylinders aren't interchangable cause I already tried and they didn't match up so I ordered them from thru an importer. But then again I'm no pro nor claim to be one and could have just went about it all wrong:?:

The chassis code is on the plate that's under the carpet flap in front of the front passenger side seat, take a picture of it or write it down so you have access to it. You probably have a CR30 or something like that which is equivalent to a YR31 series.

Find the part number your looking for in the U.S. Version and then plug it into a parts cross-reference guide to see if it matches up with the Japan version of van or possibly any other vehicle then you'll know if it's available gonna work on your van.

Theres also another member here on the site that has the same van and has documented an excellent thread on his repairs he may have a better way to look up parts? I just kinda stumbled to figure it out myself so I'm sure it's not the easiest way??

I hope that helps and makes sense-

good luck!!!

Check out this site it will help you find the import part numbers and then you can cross-reference with the ones available in the U.S.

don't count on getting help at the dealer, they wont offer any help.

Good luck!!!

Thanks guys... I can see myself spending a fair amount of time here over the next.... forever - as I work out bugs and address new ones.

Here is a little update. My drums are being turned as I type - there was plenty of meat. And the shoes I pulled out are the same shoes as in the 4wd US domestic van so they were readily available from the auto parts store.

I'm going to pick up that thermostat and drop it in and carefully flush my coolant. Hopefully my cooling issue goes away. I've been reading lots about cooling issues. Mine does not seem to be unique. I drove the van for ab 5 or 6 hours (including 2 ferry rides) to get it home. I didn't have any cooling issues until the last 20 mins of the trip when I had to pull over and cool it down twice. However, all the way home, I had intermittent heat. It would blow hot for 15 minutes, then it would blow cold for 30 minutes, back and forth. I'm hoping burping out any air and a new thermostat does the trick.

What brand did you get for the rear shoes? I looked around and couldn't come up with anything??

Thank you:thmbup:

I used the exact same shoes that are specified for the domestic van, the four-wheel-drive 1989.
They were super easy to come by, all the auto parts stores had them in stock, in a few different brands even. I just brought in my old shoe that I removed and compared them before buying them it was an exact match.

Does any one have any tips, notes, suggestions, regarding part numbers etc, before I dig into my rear bearings... I have a grinding noise coming from the rear of the van, I figure I am going to have to pull the axle.

Is this for your import or your wife's? I would assume the parts are the same. When I did one of mine several years ago I got it from the local National Auto Parts(Now Baxter). It requires the axle be pulled and a good shop press or an oil bath to heat the bearing retainer before installing it. I don't remember if you said you have one but it's covered in the service manual in good detail. I think one of mine is starting to go too. I have access to a press. If you need help let me know.

This is on mine, the diesel import, I also strongly suspect that the part numbers would be the same, especially after finding the brake drums and shoes were the same. Its not super loud, and kind of pulses with the vehicle speed, so I'm thinking I won't need to get it done tomorrow, but I probably better not put it off to long.

The photo for the Timken bearing appears to be a generic one of tapered roller bearings. The other images of a single sealed bearing and a retainer ring are the correct style. I forgot to mention before, there is also a seal inside the axle tube that should be replaced.

I can highly recommend this website for identifying factory part numbers on North American and Japanese market Toyotas. They do not sell parts on this site but have all the factory exploded views and part numbers.

Be sure to select the correct market (i.e. Japan, North America, etc.)

http://www.japan-parts.eu/toyota/jp/1989/town-masterace-v-wg/cr30g-pqzx/5_651130_105_/tool-engine-fuel

I have also had very good experiences with https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/ for ordering parts.
They have had close to 90% of the parts I've needed for my JDM MasterAce.
