So I understand our vans can be categorized into to two different generations based on engine displacement and some small component differences. I would like to know which parts are interchangeable, but most importantly which parts are not interchangeable.

For example, does the 3Y-U have an igniter? I noticed the headlight bezels are different. Also the 84-85 had no ice makers or power windows.

I think this thread may help future buyers of specific years or other members who may be searching for interchangeable parts for their own TVs.

I'm not sure where Sahuarita is (Google is trying to tell me it's in AZ, USA), but it sounds like you're not in the USA. The US got vans with the 3Y-EC (not 3Y-U) for model years 1984 and 1985, and both ice makers and power windows were available as options at the LE trim level in the US. Ignitor is specific to the 4Y-EC (and makes changing the air filter a real PITA).

The "1st gen / 2nd gen" categorization can be useful ... but only for those parts unique to each. There are some part differences between 1984 and 1985, and there are also differences between trim levels, notably (but not limited to) some significant differences between cargo and passenger vans beginning with the 1986 model year.

Being the 3Y-E has no igniter... How does the ignition system work in a 3Y-E? Are they points? Thanks Gwen!

I think its just vacuum advance vs electronic advance?
