Hi Yall,

I recently had this seal replaced by a Toyota Master Tech at a dealership. My friend introduced me to him and he does side jobs at the dealer, so I thought it would be cool for him to change this out since this dealer probably hasnt seen one of these vans in years. I have another mechanic as well but I was looking to have a backup mechanic just incase my original one was too busy (also told me he planned on moving back to his country eventually) In the floral business you need to have alot of hook ups for the amount of miles I do. I have 3 friends. All of them are mechanics. One of them is my tire guy, another is my alignment guy and the other is my main mechanic. This new toyota tech that I met told me that when he was starting his career, these vans were coming out and that he had worked on them plenty of times before. Anyhow, his price of $50 bucks was very reasonable changing out this seal and I thought it would fix the problem. The seal i am talking about is at the end of the transmission which connects to the driveshaft. I noticed transmission fluid right there on the driveshaft leaking and I noticed i was loosing fluid as well. I had to add half a quart here and there.

This is a picture of the seal that I am talking about. Anyhow, he changed this about 3 weeks ago and I noticed that it is still leaking from that spot. He seemed like he knew what he was doing, just waiting around I was impressed how fast he did it. I called him and left him a message but also wanted to ask over here to make sure. Is there anything else besides this seal that could leak out of the rear end of the transmission and collect visibly on the driveshaft? I am probably loosing a quart of transmission fluid every 700-800 miles. It was weird today when I was driving, I only lost like half a qt after two days of christmas deliveries and I could feel it was hard for it to shift out of first gear. When I added the fluid back to the line it was ok.

It could be there's a groove or other damage to the slip yoke of your driveline. It's also possible the seal has a scratch or was damaged during installation. I've been accused before of being too picky (and slow) when making repairs, but I want things to work the 1st time. When I do this job I rough up the slip yoke with some emery cloth to break the glaze & help the new seal break in. Another thing I like to do is put a super thin layer of FIPG on the outer diameter of the seal before pressing it in. This prevents any fluid from seeping between the bore & the seal. Not as important, but I also like to pack a small amount of grease inside the lip of the seal and wipe a tiny bit on the surface that will contact the slip yoke (this prevents burning of the seal edge during break-in). Same principals as demonstrated in the front pulley seal thread (http://www.toyotavantech.com/forum/showthread.php?28-Crankshaft-Pulley-seal-replacement). Tim
